FOUNTAIN OF LIVING WATER
By Ruth Ferraz
“Who Believes in Me, It Will Be Like a Fountain of living Water”
In the Bible, the phrase “whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” comes from John 7:38. Jesus uses the metaphor of “rivers of living water” to describe the spiritual life and abundance that come from trusting in Him.
Jesus had earlier told the Samaritan woman that He could give her “living water” that would never run out (John 4:10–14), symbolizing the Holy Spirit and eternal life. In John 7:38, He promises that those who believe in Him will experience a continuous, life-giving flow from within — a “fountain” of spiritual refreshment.
Symbolism of “Rivers of Living Water”
- Water as life: In Scripture, water often represents life, sustenance, and spiritual nourishment (Psalm 1:3; Ezekiel 47:1–12).
- Living water: Unlike physical water that runs out, “living water” is eternal and life-giving, symbolizing the Holy Spirit’s presence and work in believers.
- Fountain imagery: A fountain is a constant, life-sustaining source — here, it represents the ongoing flow of God’s grace, love, and power in a believer’s life.
Spiritual Meaning
Believing in Jesus is not just a one-time decision; it’s a heart commitment that leads to:
- Abundance: A continuous supply of spiritual resources and strength.
- Impact on others: Just as rivers feed the land, believers are called to share the life they’ve received.
- Sustaining power: This “living water” sustains believers through joy, sorrow, doubt, and triumph.
KEY: When Jesus says, “it will be like a fountain,” He means that faith in Him produces a constant, life-giving flow of God’s presence and grace — a spiritual fountain that nourishes the believer and enables them to live abundantly and share that life with others.
